Playing just online or single player campaign?

I understand this game has a single player campaign and a co-op online mode with the 4 main characters playable.
What if I want to play split screen? Like if I have 2 controllers, can I make it so that 2 people are playing on the console and the other 2 are AI controlled?

Im considering buying Left 4 Dead, but I have no Xbox live (please dont tell me not to get it, blah blah blah because its only good online)
